Taste and texture:
These baked bananas turn out perfectly sweet and caramelized. They are soft and tender with hints of cinnamon and vanilla. They are not dry or crunchy and are best served when they are still warn and tender.
Key ingredients and substitutions:
- Bananas - Bananas are a healthy fruit that have fiber as well as vitamins and minerals. I recommend using semi-ripe or ripe but firm bananas for this recipe. I also recommend using fresh rather than frozen bananas for this recipe.
- Avocado oil - just a little oil is all you need to fry these bananas. This helps give the bananas that perfect caramelized taste. Instead of avocado oil you could use melted butter, vegan butter, ghee or coconut oil.
- Coconut sugar - to add just the perfect amount of sweetness to this air fryer dessert. You can swap this for brown sugar as well, but I personally prefer coconut sugar to keep this dessert refined sugar free.
- Ground cinnamon - cinnamon and sugar blend perfectly to give these dessert bananas the most delicious flavour.
How to make:
Step one:
First, slice the bananas into pieces, approximately 1 inch in diameter.
Step two:
In a bowl, combine the cooking oil, vanilla extract, coconut sugar or brown sugar and cinnamon.
Step three:
One by one, coat each banana piece in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Step four:
Line your air fryer tray or basket with parchment paper and transfer the coated banana slices to the air fryer tray or basket. Cook the bananas for 5-6 minutes at 380 degrees Fahrenheit.
Chef's tips:
- Try to cut the bananas into similar sized pieces so they cook evenly.
- Make sure the bananas aren't touching each other when you put them in the air fryer or they won't cook evenly.
- Don't forget to line your air fryer with parchment paper before cooking these bananas slices.
- Every air fryer is different, so you may have to adjust the cooking time.
- Don't use over-ripe bananas for this recipe - they are too mushy and won't cook properly or cut into pieces properly.
Variations and add ins:
- Top these air fryer bananas with a little peanut butter for a delicious, healthy snack.
- Feel free to add other spices such as nutmeg, pumpkin spice, apple pie spice etc.
- You can use either brown sugar or coconut sugar for this recipe.
- For the cooking oil you can use avocado oil, butter, coconut oil or ghee. If you are vegan you can also use a vegan butter.
How to serve:
You can simply eat these fried bananas as is, but you could also use them to top cereal, ice cream, pancakes, French toast, waffles, pies, cakes, yogurt, oatmeal, overnight oats, or other dessert recipes.
How to store:
These air fryer caramelized bananas are best eaten right away but if you do want to save some for later, store them in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 1 day.
I don't recommend freezing these air fryer bananas.
