Ingredients:
- A bag of frozen onion rings - you can use either store bought pre-made onion rings or homemade onion rings, whichever you prefer! You can use any brand of onion rings that you like.
How to cook frozen onion rings in an air fryer:
Step one:
Place the frozen onion rings on the racks of your air fryer and cook them for 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until the onion rings have a nice crispy texture.
If you have a basket style air fryer:
First, preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then add the frozen onion rings to the air fryer basket and cook them for 4-5 minutes, shaking the basket half way through to ensure they cook evenly.
Top tips:
- Every model of air fryer is different so you may need to adjust the cook time slightly if you are using different air fryer brands.
- Different brands of onion rings may cook at a different rate so you may need to adjust the cooking time by 1-2 minutes.
- Try not to overlap the onion rings when you cook them or they won't cook evenly. For best results you want the onion rings to be in a single layer so the hot air can circulate around the onion rings which will lead to even crispier onion rings.
- If food tends to stick to your air fryer give the bottom of the basket or tray a spray with some non-stick cooking spray or oil spray such as olive oil, vegetable oil, or avocado oil.
- Depending on the size of your air fryer you may need to cook the onion rings in batches to get the most perfect onion rings.
- For this cooking method I do not preheat my air fryer. If you do preheat yours decrease the cook time by a few minutes.
Recipe variations and add ins:
- You can use either homemade onion rings or store bought pre-made onion rings for this cooking method.
- This method would also work for making frozen beer battered onion rings.
- To make this recipe gluten-free use gluten-free onion rings.
How to serve:
Onion rings are delicious served on their own but you can also serve them with your favourite dipping sauce such as healthy barbecue sauce, ketchup, ranch dressing, homemade honey mustard sauce, homemade mayonnaise, aioli or mustard.
Onion rings make a great side dish for many different foods including hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken tenders, or fish sticks.
How to store:
If you have any leftover cooked onion rings, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
How to reheat:
To reheat any leftover onion rings in the air fryer, first heat them for 3-4 minutes at 360 degrees Fahrenheit, and then increase the temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for another 2 minutes to get them extra crispy!
Frozen onion rings in an air fryer FAQs:
Most onion rings are not gluten free, but certain brands and restaurants do make gluten free onion rings so be sure to read labels carefully and ask questions when you are eating out at a restaurant.
If you overlap the onion rings, or crowd them too much when you cook them in the air fryer they won't crisp up as much, so be sure to leave space so that the air can circulate properly.
