Why you will love this cook method:

    • When you air fry frozen onion rings they turn out perfectly! Nice and crispy on the outside yet nice and tender on the inside.
    • They are so easy to make since you cook them from frozen. They are ready in under 10 minutes!
    • It's a healthier option than deep frying onion rings which uses more oil.
    • Making onion rings at home is a great way to save money on food - it's cheaper to make them yourself rather than ordering them from a restaurant or having them delivered.

If you are interested you can also learn more about the health benefits of using an air fryer.

    Ingredient notes:

    • Frozen onion rings - you can use either a bag of store bought pre-made onion rings such as Alexia onion rings or homemade onion rings. You can use any brand of onion rings that you like. You can also used frozen beer battered onion rings.

How to cook frozen onion rings in an air fryer:

Frozen onion rings on an air fryer rack.

Place the frozen onion rings into your air fryer and cook for 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until the onion rings are crispy.

    Top tips:

    • Different brands of onion rings may cook at a different rate so you may need to adjust the cooking time by 1-2 minutes.
    • Try not to overlap the onion rings when you cook them or they won't cook evenly.
    • If food tends to stick to your air fryer give the bottom of the basket or tray a spray with cooking oil such as olive oil, vegetable oil, or avocado oil before cooking the onion rings.
    • If you have a rack style air fryer rotate the racks half way through the cook time and if you have a basket style air fryer shake the basket half way through the cook time to ensure the onion rings cook evenly.
    • Depending on the size of your air fryer you may need to cook the onion rings in batches.
    • For this cooking method I do not preheat my air fryer. If you do preheat yours decrease the cook time by a few minutes.

    Serving ideas:

Onion rings are delicious served on their own but you can also serve them with your favourite dipping sauce such as healthy barbecue sauce, ketchup, ranch dressing, homemade honey mustard sauce, homemade mayonnaise, mustard aioli or mustard. Onion rings make a great side dish for many different foods including hot dogs, gluten-free hamburgers, air fryer chicken tenders, or air fryer fish sticks.

Frozen onion rings in an air fryer FAQs:

    Are onion rings gluten free?

Most onion rings are not gluten free, but certain brands and restaurants do make gluten free onion rings so be sure to read labels carefully and ask questions when you are eating out at a restaurant.

Why are my onion rings not crispy?

If you overlap the onion rings, or crowd them too much when you cook them in the air fryer they won't crisp up as much, so be sure to leave space so that the air can circulate properly.

How do I store leftover onion rings?

If you have any leftover cooked onion rings, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

How do I reheat onion rings in my air fryer?

To reheat leftover onion rings in your air fryer heat them for 3-4 minutes at 360 degrees Fahrenheit, and then increase the temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for another 2 minutes to get them extra crispy.
