Health benefits of ginger turmeric shots:
Turmeric can help with different health problems including breathing problems, elevated cholesterol, joint pain, fatigue, digestive issues, heart disease, kidney problems and more.
Curcumin, the main natural polyphenol in turmeric, is also known to have antioxidant properties, anti-inflammatory properties, anticancer properties and antimicrobial properties.
Lemon juice and orange juice are both naturally high in vitamin C. Vitamin C is known to have a number of health benefits including: plays an important role in bone formation, wound healing, the maintenance of healthy gums, is an antioxidant, protects the immune system, and can help fight infections.
Ingredients and substitutions:
- Fresh ginger root - I try and find ginger root with fewer knobs on it to make peeling it even easier.
- Fresh turmeric root - you can usually find fresh turmeric in the asian produce section of grocery stores.
- Fresh lemon juice - this is the perfect way to add a little citrus flavour to this drink. I recommend using freshly squeezed lemon juice for the best flavour.
- Fresh orange juice - this is added to help balance out the strong flavours of the ginger and turmeric. I recommend squeezing your own orange juice so that it's as fresh as possible. You can use any type of orange that you like including navel oranges.
- Raw honey - this is used to add a little natural sweetness to these shots and provide even more vitamins and minerals.
- Black pepper - this is used to help activate the turmeric and help with the absorption of turmeric. Piperine the active component of black pepper, increases the bioavailability of turmeric by 2000% so it's important that you don't leave it out of the recipe. Instead of black pepper you could use cayenne pepper instead.
Recipe variations and add ins:
- To give this healthy drink a different flavour you could use coconut water instead of regular water.
- To make these energy shots vegan: omit the honey or use maple syrup instead.
- For even more potential health benefits add 1-2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the recipe.
How to make ginger turmeric shots:
Step 1
Place all of the ingredients into your high speed blender.
Step 2
Blend everything well until you have a smooth drink.
Step 3
Pour through a strainer or sieve into glass shot glasses, glasses or a glass jug, and enjoy!
Top Tips:
- Be careful when handling turmeric as it can leave yellow stains on things. I like to wear gloves when handling it so that my skin and nails don't get stained and be sure to cut it on a cutting board rather than your counter top to prevent your counters from getting stained.
- The easiest way to peel ginger is to simply run the edge of a spoon along it.
- Do not omit the pepper from the recipe. It is needed to activate the turmeric.
- You will need a high speed blender to fully blend this lemon ginger turmeric shot recipe. If you don't have a high-speed blender you may end up with pieces of pulp in your drink. If this is the case you can use a mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the shots.
Serving ideas:
I like to drink this quickly like a shot, but if you would rather sip it you can drink it more slowly from a larger glass. You could also turn this turmeric drink into a mocktail by serving it with 1/2 cup to 1 cup of soda water or sparkling water and adding ice cubes, or you could turn it into a ginger tea by adding hot water to it.
How to store:
Store this drink in the fridge in an airtight container or glass jars for up to 3 days. If you want to store it for longer I recommend transferring the drink to an ice cube tray and freezing the cubes to use at a later date.
Ginger turmeric shots FAQs:
I do recommend peeling the ginger and turmeric. If you don't, you will need to use a cheesecloth to strain the juice and remove the peel after the juice is blended. I personally find this messier and more cumbersome to do which is why I recommend simply peeling it first.
Weight loss is a complex issue but there have been studies showing that turmeric can help with weight loss.
Yes you can drink these shots daily.
