Health benefits of ginger turmeric shots:
One of the easiest natural ways to improve your health and wellness is to drink immunity shots made with turmeric, ginger, lemon juice, honey and orange juice. These ingredients are all known to have various health benefits including but not limited to:
Turmeric has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine and Asian countries to help with a range of different health problems including breathing problems, arthritis, anxiety, elevated cholesterol, joint pain, fatigue, digestive issues, heart disease, kidney problems and more.
Many of the medicinal properties of turmeric are due to curcumin, the main natural polyphenol found in turmeric, which is known to have antioxidant properties, anti-inflammatory properties, anticancer properties and antimicrobial properties and is one of the most well studied natural remedies.
Ginger also has powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties and is known to help with various health issues including pain, nausea, and vomiting. It is commonly used as a digestive aid and can help sooth an upset stomach.
Lemon juice and orange juice are both naturally high in vitamin C and citric acid. Vitamin C is known to have a number of health benefits including: plays an important role in bone formation, wound healing and the maintenance of healthy gums and is an antioxidant that protects the body from the damage of free radicals. Vitamin C also protects the immune system, reduces the severity of allergic reactions and can help fight infections.
Ingredient notes:
You should be able to find all of these fresh ingredients at your local grocery store. For the exact measurements and full recipe refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Fresh ginger root - the base of this heathy drink is fresh ginger which you can easily find at your grocery store. I try and find ginger root with fewer knobs on it to make peeling it even easier.
- Fresh turmeric root - you can usually find fresh turmeric in the asian produce section of grocery stores.
- Fresh lemon juice - lemon juice is a great source of vitamin c and is the perfect way to add a little citrus flavour to this drink. I recommend using freshly squeezed lemon juice for the best flavour.
- Fresh orange juice - orange juice is added to help balance out the strong flavors of the ginger and turmeric and add more vitamin C to this turmeric juice recipe. I recommend squeezing your own orange juice so that it's as fresh as possible. You can use any type of orange that you like including navel oranges.
- Raw honey - honey is a delicious natural sweetener and active ingredient that is used to add a little natural sweetness to these shots and provide even more vitamins and minerals. If you are vegan you could omit this from the recipe or use maple syrup instead.
- Black pepper - a pinch of black pepper is used to help activate the turmeric and help with the absorption of turmeric. In fact, piperine the active component of black pepper, has been shown to increase the bioavailability of turmeric or curcumin by 2000% so it's important that you don't leave it out of the recipe. Don't worry, you only need a little bit of pepper to activate the curcumin so these shots don't taste like pepper. Instead of black pepper you could use cayenne pepper instead.
How to make:
Step one:
Place all of the ingredients into your high speed blender.
Step two:
Blend everything well until you have a smooth drink.
Step three:
Pour through a strainer or sieve into shot glasses, a jug, or regular glasses and enjoy!
Top Tips:
Be careful when handling turmeric as it can leave yellow turmeric stains on things. Be sure to cut it on a cutting board rather than your counter top to prevent your counters from getting stained. I also like to wear gloves when handling it so that my skin and nails don't get stained.
The easiest way to peel ginger is to simply run the edge of a spoon along it.
Do not omit the pepper from the recipe. It is needed to activate the turmeric.
You will need a high speed blender to fully blend this lemon ginger turmeric shot recipe. If you don't have a high-speed blender you may end up with pieces or pulp in your drink. If this is the case you can use a mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the shots.
Recipe variations:
- To give these healthy drinks a different flavour you could use coconut water instead of regular water.
- Instead of black pepper you could use cayenne pepper to make this ginger turmeric energy shot.
- To make these energy shots vegan omit the honey or use maple syrup instead.
- For even more potential health benefits add 1-2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the recipe.
How to serve:
One of the easiest ways to get your daily dose of turmeric is to simply drink this elixir from a shot glass. If you would rather sip it you can drink it more slowly from a larger glass.
You could also turn this turmeric drink into a mocktail by serving it with 1/2 cup to 1 cup of soda water or sparkling water and ice cubes for a refreshing, healthy drink.
Some people also prefer to drink it like a ginger tea by adding hot water to it and sipping on it that way.
How to store:
Store this drink in the fridge in an airtight container, glass container, glass jar or glass bottle for up to 3 days. If you want to store it longer I recommend transferring the drink to an ice cube tray and freezing the cubes to use at a later date.
Frequently asked questions:
I do recommend peeling the ginger and turmeric. If you don't, you will need to use a cheesecloth to strain the juice and remove the peel after the juice is blended. I personally find this messier and more cumbersome to do which is why I recommend simply peeling it first.
Weight loss is a complex issue but there have been studies showing that turmeric can help with weight loss.
Yes you can drink these shots daily.
