I love making matcha desserts like matcha chocolate chip cookies because they have such a fun colour and unique flavour, which is why I can't wait for you to try the matcha brownies recipe I am sharing with you today.

Why you will love these brownies:

    • The flavour! They are soft, fudgy, moist, and chewy with just hints of matcha.
    • These brownies are really easy to make and you only need one bowl to make them so the clean up is so simple.
    • These green tea brownies have such a fun green colour so they are a great option for St. Patrick's day or Christmas!
    • These matcha brownies are gluten-free and can easily be made dairy-free too.

    Ingredients:

For the full list and exact measurements refer to the recipe card later in this post.

    • Gluten-free all purpose flour - if you aren't gluten-free you can use regular all purpose flour.
    • Matcha - matcha powder gives these matcha brownies a unique flavour and also a beautiful green colour.
    • Cane sugar - do not try swapping this for another granulated sweetener.
    • White chocolate chips - add both sweetness and a pretty contrast in colour to the green from the matcha powder.
    • Butter - I recommend using unsalted butter but if you do use salted butter, omit the salt from the recipe.
    • Eggs - help add moisture and help the brownies become even more fudgy and dense.

    How to make matcha brownies:

A bowl with flour and matcha powder in it.
    1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line an 8"x 8" glass baking pan with parchment paper. Add the dry ingredients to the bowl of your standing mixer and blend well with a spoon until well combined and there are no clumps in the flour.
A bowl with eggs and flour in it.
    1. Step 2: Add the wet ingredients to the bowl and use your standing mixer to blend everything well until you have a smooth dough.
A bowl with a green batter in it with white chocolate chips on top of the batter.
    1. Step 3: Now stir in the white chocolate chips by hand.
A glass baking dish lined with parchment paper with a green brownie batter in it.
    1. Step 4: Transfer the batter to the baking pan and spread it evenly until it's smooth. Bake the brownies for 22-25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted inside comes out clean. Let the brownies cool completely and then cut them into pieces and enjoy!

    Top tips:

    • To make these matcha brownies dairy-free: use a vegan butter and dairy-free white chocolate chips.
    • Let these brownies cool completely before cutting into them.
    • Storage: store these matcha brownies in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.
    • To freeze: freeze them in a freezer bag or airtight container for up to 3 months. I recommend cutting them into pieces before freezing them.

    Matcha brownies FAQs:

What chocolate goes well with matcha?

Matcha goes really well with white chocolate. Matcha has a bitter flavour while white chocolate is rather sweet so the two contrast each other really well.

Can I use coconut sugar to make these matcha brownies?

No! I tried making these brownies with coconut sugar instead of cane sugar and they tasted terrible.

Can I omit the eggs to make these matcha brownies vegan?

I don't recommend omitting the eggs or swapping the eggs in this recipe. I have not tested this brownie recipe with any egg replacements such as chia eggs or flax eggs. If you do try it please let me know if it works out or not.

    What does matcha taste like?

Matcha has a sweet, grassy, earthy flavour. It can be a little bitter, but the flavour will also depend on the quality of the matcha.  High quality, ceremonial grade matcha has a sweeter taste and is less bitter than lower grade matcha.
