What is a Moscow mule?
A classic Moscow mule is a cocktail that was invented in the 1940's that is made with 3 main ingredients: vodka, ginger beer and lime juice. Traditionally it is served in a copper mug which takes on the cold temperature of the drink, making the drink seem even colder and more refreshing when you drink it.
However you may not drink alcohol, or may be cutting back on the amount of alcohol you drink, but that doesn't mean you should have to miss out on delicious drinks and cocktails. Enter mocktails! Non-alcoholic ginger beer is the key to a good virgin Moscow mule. The more strongly flavoured ginger beer you use, the better flavour this drink will have. A great ginger beer can take this drink from bland, to amazing!
The best ginger beer to make a Moscow mule with is Fever Tree ginger beer. Other ginger beer brands that can be used to make mules include Q Ginger Beer which is a little more sweet, and Reed's Ginger Beer which has an extra strong ginger flavour, but you can use any brand of ginger beer that you prefer.
Fresh lime juice adds even more flavour and fizz to this virgin mule. I highly recommend using fresh lime juice rather than bottled lime juice to give this drink the best refreshing citrus taste.
How to make:
Step one:
First, put some ice cubes into your copper mug, coper cup or glass.
Step two:
Add the ginger beer and the lime juice to the mug and give everything a quick stir. Then enjoy!
Variations and add ins:
- If you can't find ginger beer you could use ginger ale to make this virgin Moscow mule mocktail instead, but it will make for a sweeter drink and will have much less ginger flavour.
- If you want to make this drink sugar free, use Zevia Ginger Beer or Reed's Zero Sugar Ginger Beer.
- To give this mule a stronger ginger flavour add a bit of fresh ginger or ginger simple syrup.
- If you prefer a stronger lime flavour, add an extra 1-2 tablespoons of lime juice.
- If you like a milder taste, add a little bit of sparkling water or soda water to this non-alcoholic twist on a classic Moscow mule recipe.
- For even more complex flavors feel free to add some grapefruit juice, cranberry juice or orange juice.
- If you are serving a crowd feel free to double or triple this recipe. The great thing about this recipe is that it is one of the easiest mocktails to make so you can make more in no time!
How to serve:
Moscow mules are classically served in beautiful copper mugs which help to keep the drink nice and cold because copper is an excellent conductor, meaning that cold or hot temperatures spread rapidly through the material.
If you’re shopping for copper mugs, be sure to buy food-safe copper mugs that won't leach into your drink because copper can leach into acidic foods and can pose health risks. However, if you don't have copper mule mugs you can use a glass or cocktail glass to serve this non-alcoholic beverage.
You can serve this refreshing non-alcoholic drink as is, or garnish it with a lime wedge, a fresh mint leaves, fresh basil or a sprig of rosemary.
This mocktail version is a great option to serve at a baby shower.
How to store:
This drink is best served right away but can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours before serving.
