What is a pornstar martini?
A pornstar martini is a passion-fruit-flavoured cocktail made with vanilla vodka, Passoã, fresh passionfruit juice, and lime juice. The drink was first created in 2002 by London bartender Douglas Ankrah of the renowned London Academy of Bartending (LAB). It is classically served with a side car of Prosecco or champagne as a palate cleanser before enjoying the cocktail.
Of note, it doesn't actually contain vermouth but is served in a Martini coupe glass which is why it's called a martini. Because of its controversial name, some people prefer to call this cocktail a passion star or passionfruit martini.
However, for health reasons, more and more people are looking to drink less alcohol, which is where mocktail recipes, or virgin versions of classic drinks like this martini come in. That is why I created this pornstar martini mocktail recipe for you. Taste and texture:
This virgin martini is sweet, citrusy, and a little sour. It has flavours of passion fruit, vanilla and a hint of lime. It is cold and refreshing and so smooth and velvety to drink.
Key ingredients and substitutions:
For the exact measurements for these ingredients refer to the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Passion fruit puree - You get the passion fruit puree from fresh passion fruits. You can find fresh passion fruits in the produce section of most grocery stores. This adds such a delicious, sweet flavour to this delicious cocktail.
- Passion fruit juice - passion fruit juice is used to naturally sweeten this passion fruit martini mocktail. If you can find it I recommend using 100% pure passion fruit juice rather than a passion fruit juice mix or passion fruit juice from concentrate.
- Pineapple juice - when combined with the passion fruit juice, the pineapple juice creates the most delicious, sweet tropical flavour. I recommend using pure pineapple juice rather than a pineapple juice mix. If you can't find pineapple juice you can use apple juice instead.
- Vanilla simple syrup - vanilla simple syrup adds even more sweet flavour to this drink while also enhancing all the other flavours of this juices and making them even more bold and apparent. You can either make your own vanilla sugar syrup or buy it premade.
- Lime juice - fresh lime juice adds the perfect amount of sour taste to this virgin drink which contrasts perfectly with the sweet juices and vanilla syrup. I recommend using fresh lime juice if possible.
How to make:
Step one:
First, cut the passion fruits in half and scoop the pulp and seeds into a cocktail shaker.
Step two:
Now add the remaining ingredients to the cocktail shaker.
Step three:
Then shake the drink to combine all the ingredients and and then strain it into 2 martini glasses to enjoy!
Tips:
- I highly recommend using a cocktail shaker to make this drink. It's tricky to make without one.
- Be sure to strain the drink when you pour it into the glasses to remove any seeds or puree that makes it out of the cocktail shaker (see the step by step photo above). Otherwise you will end up with passion fruit seeds in your drink.
- Use ice cubes rather than crushed ice for making this drink. Ice cubes are perfect to cool the drink off without diluting it too much.
- Shake, don't stir your mocktail. Shaking is better at cooling a drink than stirring is because the liquid is repeatedly in contact with the ice cubes. Since this drink is served without ice cubes in it, you want it to be nice and cold when poured from the shaker.
Recipe variations:
- If you don't have pineapple juice you can use apple juice instead.
- Instead of vanilla simple syrup you can use maple syrup.
- If you like a stronger lime flavour add more lime juice.
- Feel free to add a splash of orange juice to give this virgin drink a different citrusy flavour.
- If you are serving a crowd you can double or triple this recipe.
How to serve:
This passion fruit mocktail is best served right after it's made so that it's nice and cold. A classic martini is usually served in martini glasses, but if you don't have any you can use any other type of cocktail glass or even wine glasses to serve this drink.
You could also prepare this porn start martini mocktail ahead of time and keep it in the fridge until you are ready to serve it. That way it stays nice and cold.
This passion fruit drink is classically garnished with passion fruit, but you don't have to garnish it if you wish. You could also garnish it with other things such as a lime slice, an edible flower, or fresh fruit.
You do not need to serve this drink with a sidecar or palate cleanser. It's the perfect option for a dry January!
How to store:
This drink is best served right after it's made when it's nice and cold. However, you can also make it ahead of time and keep it in the fridge for a few hours to keep it cold before serving.
Frequently asked questions:
Rumour has it that the drink got its name because of its beautiful bright color. It was felt that it "looked like something a pornstar would drink."
Cocktails contain alcohol, while mocktails are simply the non-alcoholic version of the same drink.
