Jump to the Recipe Card.- Almond flour - to help give these donuts the perfect texture while keeping them gluten-free and grain free. Be sure to use almond flour and not almond meal which is too gritty.
- Cacao powder - you can use either cacao powder or cocoa powder to make these gluten-free chocolate donuts.
- Tapioca flour - to help give these donuts a light and fluffy texture. I do not recommend trying to replace this with another flour.
- Coconut flour - to add the perfect crisp edges. Do not try replacing this with another flour.
- Full fat coconut milk - this adds moisture and natural sweetness to these donuts. You could swap this for another dairy-free milk such as unsweetened cashew milk or almond milk.
- Coconut oil - this helps add moisture to the chocolatey donuts and give them that perfect outer texture. You will also use this to make the chocolate glaze on these paleo chocolate donuts.
- Honey or maple syrup - either of these natural sweeteners can be used to sweeten these donuts while keeping them refined sugar free.
- Eggs - to help bind the ingredients and give the donuts a nice fluffy texture. I don't recommend trying to make these donuts egg free or without eggs. This is not a vegan chocolate donut recipe.
- Baking soda - to help the donuts rise when they bake. Be sure to use baking soda and not baking powder.
- Dark chocolate - to make the chocolate glaze for these donuts. You can either use dark chocolate chips or a dark chocolate bar for this. To keep this recipe refined sugar free use chocolate sweetened with coconut sugar.
Recipe variations and add ins:
- Feel free to top the chocolate icing with other ingredients such as chocolate shavings, shredded coconut, sprinkles, cacao nibs, or chocolate chips.
- Instead of the chocolate glaze you can make a chocolate frosting to top these donuts.
How to make gluten-free chocolate donuts:
- Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and add all the donut ingredients to a large bowl.
- Step 2: Stir or whisk the ingredients together until you have a smooth donut batter.
- Step 3: Now transfer the dough to a donut mold, filling each mold to approximately 3/4 full.
- Step 4: Then bake the donuts for 13-15 minutes, until a toothpick inserted inside comes out clean.
- Step 5: To make the chocolate glaze or icing, heat the chocolate bar and coconut oil together in a microwave safe dish, for 30 second intervals on high heat, until melted.
- Step 6: Once the donuts are cooled, drizzle the chocolate glaze over each donut and add any extra toppings that you wish. Then enjoy!
Top tips:
- Use room temperature eggs for best results.
- Do not try swapping the flours in these donuts. I cannot guarantee that any swaps will work out.
- Don't fully fill each donut mold or each donut will end up looking more like a muffin rather than a donut. Fill each mold to 3/4 full.
- These donuts are best served once they have cooled completely.
- Cool these donuts more quickly by cooling them on a baking rack.
